Saltcoats Purple Vein, eli tutummin Vinski vain, on aivan ihana poniori. Se on hyvin nöyrä ja sillä on korkea työmoraali, ja sen kanssa puuhastelu on aina kivaa. Vinski tuli meille jo 2-vuotiaana ja on ollut joka ikinen päivä iloisella tuulella. Korvat luimussa tämän ponin voi nähdä vain silloin, kun ötökät eivät lopeta sen laiduntamisen häiritsemistä.
Vinskin voi hoitaa melkeinpä missä vain. Jos hoidat sen irti käytävällä tai karsinassa, kannattaa kuitenkin tarkistaa, että kaikki ovet ovat kiinni. Voikko herra nimittäin lähtee helposti eloisana poikana vähän oma-aloitteisesti tutkimaan paikkoja lähietäisyydeltä. Vinski rakastaa mutakylpyjä tarhassa, mutta rakastaa se myös sen irrottamista kumisualla hieroen. Myös peseminen on kivaa - tosin ori mieluummin vain leikkisi veden kanssa, kuin seisoisi paikoillaan. Muutamalla pehmeällä komennolla ponin saa kuitenkin nopeasti ruotuun. Satulointi ja suitsinta käy helposti, kun Vinski suorastaan haukkaa kuolaimet suuhunsa innoissaan töihin lähdöstä. Edes näin vanhemmalla iällä ori ei ole rauhoittunut juuri lainkaan.
Kuten sanottua, ratsuna Vinski on oikea unelma. Tämä voi kuulostaa jo ärsyttävältä liioittelulta ("Joo joo, kuultu on, tää heppa on ihan täykky, blaablaa."), mutta nyt puhutaankin oikeasti totta! Tai on Vinski ainakin allekirjoittaneen unelmaratsu. Se tekee aina parhaansa ja yrittää miellyttää ratsastaa niin pitkälle kuin voi - ja vähän pidemmällekin. Vinski pyörisi vaikka paikoillaan 10 kierrosta täydellistä piruettia, jos kykenisi. Ainoa miinus tässä ponissa on se tosiasia, että sen liikkeet eivät ole kovin mukavat ratsastajalle. Liike on kovin laajaa, ja jos kehonhallinta ei ole tiptop-kunnossa, saattaa niissä istuminen olla hieman haastavaa. Tiiviisti istumalla saa kuitenkin ponin yleensä helpommin hallittavaan pakettiin. Kenttäponiakin Vinskistä on yritetty tehdä, mutta herran hyppytyyli ei ole sieltä parhaimmasta päästä, niin se jätettiin sitten taka-alalle. Edelleen käymme kuitenkin ponin kanssa virkistymässä maastoesteillä.
Kilpaileminen Vinskin kanssa on helppoa, kuten arvata saattaa. Ori suunnilleen lastaa itse itsensä, ja kisapaikallakin se käyttäytyy kuten hienon herran kuuluukin. Välillä pitää vähän tammoille ilmoitella, että paikalle on saavuttu, mutta ainakin 80% huomiosta kiinnitty silti sitä käsittelevään ihmiseen.
Saltcoats Purple Vein, or more familiarly Vinski Vein, is an absolutely wonderful pony stallion. He is very humble and has a strong work ethic, and spending time with him is always fun. Vinski came to us when he was just 2 years old and has been in a cheerful mood every single day since. You can only see this pony with his ears pinned back when insects won’t stop bothering him while grazing.
Vinski can be handled almost anywhere. If you handle him in a hallway or stall, however, it’s wise to make sure all doors are closed. This palomino gentleman has a tendency to take off and explore his surroundings on his own if he’s feeling lively. Vinski loves mud baths in the paddock, but he also loves being brushed off with a rubber curry comb afterward. Bathing is fun too—though he would rather just play with the water than stand still. With a few gentle commands, however, you can quickly get him under control. Saddling and bridling is easy, as Vinski eagerly grabs the bit in his mouth, excited to get to work. Even at his age, the stallion hasn’t calmed down much at all.
As mentioned, Vinski is a true dream as a riding pony. This may sound like annoying exaggeration (“Yeah, yeah, we’ve heard it, this horse is perfect, blah blah”), but here we’re being serious! At least for the writer, Vinski is a dream mount. He always does his best and tries to please his rider as much as he can—and even a little beyond. If he could, Vinski would spin ten perfect pirouettes in place. The only downside to this pony is that his gaits aren’t very comfortable for the rider. His movements are quite expansive, and if your core strength isn’t top-notch, sitting can be a bit challenging. With a steady, tight seat, however, the pony can usually be made much more manageable. Vinski was even trained as a cross-country pony at one point, but his jumping style wasn’t ideal, so that was set aside. We still enjoy taking him out for fun over cross-country obstacles.
Competing with Vinski is easy, as you might expect. The stallion practically loads himself, and he behaves like a true gentleman at competitions. Occasionally, he makes sure to announce his presence to the mares, but at least 80% of his attention is still focused on the person handling him.
