Hjalma ist eine freundliche jedoch auch dickköpfige Fjordpferdsute. Manch überehrgeizigen Reiter hat die sonst doch lauffreudige Stute schon zur Verzweiflung gebracht, denn nichts hasst die Falbdame so sehr wie Reiter die sie mit ihrem übermäßigen Ehrgeiz in eine bestimmte Richtung zwingen wollen. Hjalma muss ohne Druck, jedoch aber auch mit Sachverstand geritten werden und dann entfaltet sie unterm Reiter ihre wahre Größe. Zwingt man sie zu etwas, schaltet sie auf stur, verweigert die Arbeit, und wird trotz treiben immer langsamer und eigensinniger. Reiter die sie sanft und ohne Druck reiten haben aber an ihr eine wahre Freude, für einen Norweger ist sie sehr leichtfüßig und agil, und sie macht im Dressurviereck ein sehr gutes Bild. Hjalma hat nichts gegen den einen oder anderen Sprung einzuwenden, aber ihre Stärke liegt in der Dressur. Im Umgang ist die Norwegerstute sehr angenehm, jedoch will sie nicht am Kopf ständig begrabscht und gestreichelt werden. Akzeptiert man dies und lässt sie einfach in Ruhe ist sie sehr freundlich und interessiert am Menschen.
