nur für fortgeschrittene Reiter geeignet!

Ike ist ein spannender Charakter und ein Pferd, das man gern auch ein bisschen länger beobachtet. In der Herde ist er ein richtiges Lämmchen. Er ist das Schlusslicht in der Rangordnung der Sportpferde, wird aber selten wirklich getriezt. Er weicht sofort aus, wenn sich ein anderes Pferd Platz verschaffen will, darf sich dafür aber auch immer über deren Schutz freuen, wenn er ausgestreckt wie tot in der Sonne liegt und schläft. Auch Fellpflege darf er mit allen anderen betreiben und wird von ihnen freudig begrüßt, wenn er weg war. Er neigt manchmal recht stark zum Klammern und ist deshalb auch nicht so einfach von der Koppel zu holen.
Grundsätzlich rennt er immer erst einmal weg vor Menschen, die auf der Koppel auf ihn zukommen, und selbst mit Futter lässt er sich nicht anlocken. Kommen jedoch die anderen Pferde ebenfalls in den Stall, möchte er auf keinen Fall alleine zurückbleiben und folgt ihnen sogar ohne Halfter. Wer wirklich nur Ike von der Weide holen will, sollte sich am besten ein paar Freunde zur Unterstützung mitnehmen und sich auf eine Verfolgungsjagd gefasst machen, von der sich meist auch die anderen Herdenmitglieder anstecken lassen.

Am Putzplatz zappelt er dann vor allem herum. Besonders schlimm ist es, wenn er alleine angebunden ist. Dann kann er überhaupt nicht stillhalten und wiehert sich die Seele aus dem Leib. Aber selbst wenn er Gesellschaft hat, dreht er sich von einer auf die andere Seite und achtet nicht darauf, ob er auf irgendetwas draufsteigt. Für Tierärzte und Hufschmiede ist das natürlich ein besonderes Ärgernis, aber auch Reitschüler sind weniger erfreut, wenn der Wallach sein halbes Gewicht auf ihren Zehen verteilt.
Putzen fällt deshalb bei ihm meist spärlich aus – aber zum Glück ist er ja so dunkel, dass man Mistflecken gar nicht erst sieht. Bei weiblichen Personen ist er übrigens häufig noch zappeliger und er lässt sich von Männerstimmen deutlich besser beruhigen als von denen von Frauen oder Kindern. Und Raucher mag er sowieso überhaupt nicht und lässt sich von Menschen, die nach Rauch stinken, oft gar nicht erst anfassen. Zündet sich jemand in seiner Gegenwart eine Zigarette an, wird er erst so richtig nervös, offenes Feuer kann er noch weniger leiden als Rauch, selbst wenn es nur für einen Moment aufflammt.

Beim Reiten ist er dafür sehr motiviert. Für die Dressur kann er sich dabei meist nur mäßig begeistern und ist grundsätzlich eher nur für fortgeschrittene Reiter zu empfehlen, aber wer mit ihm umgehen kann, kommt in den Genuss eines willigen Reitpferdes.
Ike hat ein sehr hohes Grundtempo, das für manche Reiter gewöhnungsbedürftig sein kann. Seine Gangarten sind stets fleißig und im Galopp bringt er die lange Seite mitunter mit nur wenigen Sprüngen hinter sich. Bei so einem Tempo ist es oft eine Herausforderung, die Ecken überhaupt auszureiten, was aber beim Springen ohnehin nicht wirklich verlangt wird. Und fürs Springen lebt Ike. Selbst niedrige Sprünge überwindet er, als wären es hohe Oxer, was noch ein Grund ist, wieso er im Anfängerunterricht nichts verloren hat. Er ist furchtlos und verweigert so gut wie nie, selbst wenn sein Reiter am liebsten die Notbremse ziehen würde. Auch im Freispringen zeigt er viel Vermögen und Freude und wird lange nicht müde, Hürden wieder und wieder zu überwinden. Für Geländesprünge ist er nicht geeignet, da er beim Galopp auf offener Flur sehr schnell unkontrollierbar wird und neben Bocksprüngen auch noch ganz andere Einlagen einbaut. Am Reitplatz oder in der Halle ist er jedoch der Superstar unter den Sportpferden und einer, der ganz hoch hinauswill.
